Great article. I've been dealing with this stuff on Mt. Evans the last few years, both climbing and bicycling.
I've taken to leaving my Golden eagle pass in the wind shield of my car when I show up for an Alpine start. Even doing this I've been "ticketed" at summit lake.....which isn't even forest service porperty. I've typically either found a close by ranger who quickly got rid of the ticket or showed the people at the gate who also got rid of it. But I shouldn't have to deal with it.
I've also been SCREAMED at as I rode past the entrance station on my bike. Having just rode up 15 miles(or so) from Idaho Springs and not wanting to stop (and ruin my mojo) for the 8 cars at the entrance station. I knew the law, I wasn't going to use the forest service facilities, and I had a Golden Eagle pass. The person maning the station came charging out, ran up the road and screamed at me "What you don't stop?" I informed him I knew my rights and that I did not have to pay. He then screamed "don't fuck'n stop anywhere!". That's literally a quote.
It's pretty disturbing that the Forest service can pull this kind of crap. I mean seriously this is a CONGRESSIONAL ACT!!
