Who Said That? Done - See Part 2

Yep - I was thinking Herzog but he's French as well. Can't say Lacedelli or Compagnoni 'cause they were anything but just.

Okay, last guess before I turn in. Ricardo Cassin?

Paul Preuss?

His free climbs were way ahead of his time.

Our climber was born before both Compagnoni and Lacedelli and died much younger.

Strong as....

Buhl?

Edit to add...arghh...Buhl is Austrian.

Well, it's not Cassin. I give up. I'm going to bed. :-)

Sella?

Correct: It's not Cassin, and both Preuss and Buhl were Austrian. Our climber's masterpiece was considered at the time the hardest route in the Alps and still commands a lot of respect. The quote I chose is a reflection of his on how he felt after reaching the summit.

(Also, "as strong as just" is a riddle.)

Comici?

Neither Sella nor Comici. Comici and our climber were born in the same region of Italy, but Comici is remembered as a Dolomites climber, while our man did his most celebrated ascents in the Western Alps.

Dibona?

Man, you're killin' it!

Not Angelo Dibona. I believe Dibona's activity was mostly in the Dolomites.

One more hint: Grandes Jorasses and Mont Blanc du Tacul.

Yes! Giusto Gervasutti, il fortissimo.
("giusto," his first name, means "just," while "fortissimo," his nickname, means "very strong.")

Good clues brenta. That was a lot of fun.

BrianSLC, I am off to bed, and I know you would have got it if I didn't, so would you mind posting a new quote?

Well done!

Here we go:

"So let us finish with a paradox: although evolution in all sports will always tend towards a higher performance, it will not be so in mountaineering. Though new techniques make possible harder routes, they do not change the fact that in certain conditions a repetition may be harder than a first ascent. One day performance will be held in check for lack of an objective, so that only the climber's human qualities come into play, and these do not change. All of which amounts to saying that mountaineering is far more than just a game or a sport: it is a great and beautiful adventure."

A hint?

Self proclaimed "amateur" climber.

Herzog?

Good guess, but no.

Partner of Bonatti's. In fact, Bonatti wrote the forward in his book.

Given' it away 'cause we're stalled...
