I'll be running the competition and can provide some details about the problems and format. The competition will be open to all levels and we highly encourage beginning and recreational level climbers to participate as well as the more advanced. We will be setting 35 problems with 15 of them being spread between V0- and V2. If you are abnormally strong you will likewise have plenty to climb with the remaining 20 problems approaching V11. I would be very surprised if someone sent all of the problems in the two hours reserved for competition. The format is very simple: each problem is one "summit" and the person with the most "summits" at the end of the night wins. We will separate the kids from the adult scores to ensure that none of you feel bad when a 10 year old climbs their age. This event is less about competing and more about having a good time and helping out the community. We are all looking forward to a fun night and some great climbing. Please come out and enjoy the comp with us and help out a good cause.

I think this sounds like a good idea. Tony, let me know if you decide to go. I have not climbed in a friendly comp in a long time.

I'll go. I'll need a couple of trustworthy spotters that will keep my right leg up and my knee together. Seth, you bringing pals?

Hey Matty and/or Brendan, I just wanted to chime in and give ya guys props for setting up something like this. I had no idea what "Summit for Someone" was, but looking at the webpage, it looks like an awesome organization. I'd love to come and join the fun, but work just doesn't seem like it'll roll. I wish ya guys the best for the event with a great turn out, I'll pass the word to my friends who are non-MP's for sure!

Matt deserves all of the credit. He came to us and asked us if we would be willing to host such an event and we simply decided to help out. Tell your friends and don't miss this opportunity to have fun, get a work out, and do some good all at the same time. You might even leave with some nice gear donated by the many companies supporting Matt in his endeavor.

For those that have never done a comp like this, let me point out:

  • The problems are usually well set for comps. The spend time doing them and pre-running them for grades and fun factor. They are usually designed not to be overly reachor or awkward. Expect good problems.
  • The problems are new for the comp- you have not done them before.
  • Bouldering comps that are non-judged open comps are pretty fun, and can be though of as a free climbing lesson. You hit your limit on problems that other people are working on and you can watch the techniques and moves that worked (or did not) by other climbers and learn from it.
  • The schwag-to-cost ratio is pretty good, and the money goes to a non-profit.

Anyway, I always find that the charity bouldering comps are a good time. I hope I see some MP.com folks there!

It is important to note that in order to participate in the comp one must pay the gym entry fee as well as the five dollar donation for "Summit for Someone". It is not quite the deal some of you may have imagined, but when you consider that some of your money goes to charity it might sting a little less.
