How is the rock quality in El Potrero Chico?

In other words, if you do not wear a helmet while sport climbing at other places do you wear your helmet at El PC because of poor rock quality?

Well, I always wear a helmet, but I think you'd be absolutely nuts not to wear one at Potrero, even when just walking around the base of the climbs. There is a LOT of loose stuff up there!

Agreed! Wear a helmet! I've been there twice, and I always wear a helmet, even on the shorter routes. There is a good amount of loose stuff up high...

If you only wear a helmet at one crag on the planet, where it at Potrero...

It's not that the rock quality is poor....it's that there is lots of loose stuff above you. There is a difference.

I just got back from my first trip to EPC....and I concur with the folks above. Wear a helmut.

+1 what you pull on is generally solid.

Yep, a helmet is good at PC.

Those cliffs/mtns are 3000 feet tall. Plenty of potential there.

But there is the people factor. There are lots of multi pitch so there will be people above you with ropes and draws and they will drop them.

I think most climbers have a story of "SOMETHING" landing close to them.

Go have fun.

PC is a awesome good time.

it's not necessarily that there is a lot of loose stuff above you, but rather that there are usually people above you who don't know how to climb on loose rock.

my comment is somewhat joking, but as others have said, bring your helmet and be prepared to climb on rock that isn't 100% solid.

The way the canyon is designed, you will hear giant rock falls EVERYDAY. They are loud an echo everywhere! Dont't be stupid, it's worth it to wear a helmet!

I was down there for around 2 weeks, and got hit 2 times by (small) falling rock, and nearly some more too.

There's been a major rockfall their recently, after a 48-hour rain storm. You might want to read
