Most Dangerous Sport in the World
I watched a special on 60 minutes about the most dangerous sport in the world. The sport featured was base jumping. T'was intersting, but I feel compelled to say that I think the title "most dangerous sport in the world" belongs to soloing without any protection, maybe climbing super hard X/R-rated lines or teaching someone how to belay while climbing a route you've never been on before :P |

The key with both of your examples is that the commitment point is rather late. With sufficient skill, you may never do a move you can't reverse while soloing, or get yourself into a position where you have to trust the other person. With BASE jumping, the commitment point is a few seconds after the beginning of the exercise. The way I define "dangerous" is based on 1) the consequences of a major screw-up, and 2) where in the proceedings does a tiny mistake (say tying your shoelaces too loosely) constitute a major screw-up for a world class practitioner. Walking can be quite dangerous for the neophyte, but I doubt that any of use would call walking the most dangerous sport in the world. Meanwhile, about 1 in 60 basejumpers burns in. And these are typically people who know what they are doing. If soloing or any climbing really, was that dangerous, we'd see HUNDREDS more deaths each year. |
