Flying Cams???

I've flown many times with my trad rack and harness and always carry on. Never had a problem with the chalk bag. I've been searched about as many times as I've been let through without a hassle. I've even forgot to take off the nut tool and not been hassled. If you get hassled just smile and be nice, they'll let you through. Never argue and remember that most of the folks who work for TSA are the lowest common denominator.

My buddy got his pack "searched" as we were leaving Vegas. He knew he forgot to pull out his knife, but didn't say anything to the TSA guy. The guy spent 10 minutes trying to figure out how to open the pack, was probably to embarassed to ask, and gave it back without ever looking in it. Yayy airport security! good luck all

glad someone asked this one i'd been wondering about the carry on issue. good to know.

Here's a couple other discussions about flying with gear. Looks like gear in a cary on will be a good option. I carried most my gear including a double rack last time I flew, but left my nut tools, knife, and rope in my checked bag.

take them on your carry on. I did and you can make sure they are safe and there is no weight restrictions on your carry on.

I've carried on numerous times with no problems. I specifically asked the TSA in Vegas on Sunday and he said no problem. The only things that are excluded are obviously knives and ice tools as listed below.

No problems flying on Sun Country out of Mpls, they didn't even blink at my bag full of rope and metal... maybe because it was 5:00am

On the way home flying out of Phoenix the guy said "Mountain climber?"
I replied "yep". Then he sent the bag through the scanner once more but didn't ask me to open it.

I ended up only bringing a sport rack though, so I didn't have nuts, cams, etc.

It may have already been said but you should considering carrying on your climbing pro. That way, you don't have to worry about the baggage tossers AND your checked luggage won't weigh so much and you're less likely to have to pay extra luggage fees.
