After much arguing with my mates about our Spring Break adventure ( I wanted to climb, they wanted to go backpacking) we've compremised on a hiking/ bouldering trip.

I was just curious as to if there's enough problems and such to keep you busy for a few days?

Also what is the scoop on Camping there?

Any Beta is super appreciated! Thanks!

good choice, big bend is awesome. Try to get there early so you can secure a good site. You can sites directly across from the boulders if your lucky, if you aren't you'll be downriver. Last year they had burned (or it burned) along the banks and it was black soot. The camping is all in designated spots. Bring summer cloths for the day and LOTS of water and sunscreen, but at night BUNDLE UP!! It gets COOOLLLDDDDD!!! I had on long johns, fleece, hat, gloves and a belay jacket! Bring wood too if you like a nice fire (who doesn't?)

I think there will be plently to keep you busy, but there are also lots of trad / sport routes in the immediate area. I loved it there and hopefully will be back around Easter.

yeah awesome place. Should keep you busy for a few days as there are a lot of problems. If not you can easily get some good sport climbing in just down the road at Wall Street.

more info on camping here: blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/moab/re…

camping is a first come first served thing, but I have never had any issues.

i have a pamphlet guide to some of the climbing at BBNP. i climbed there over new years this year. the cragging at grapevine hills was pretty loose. dog canyon has a few interesting bolted routes. and there is some interesting alpine-esque backcountry stuff. bring a big sense of adventure with you for those routes.

i will try and get this scanned and post the pdfs of the topos and descriptions.

Haha, I think the original poster is talking about Big Bend boulders near Moab, and some of the replies are referring to Big Bend national park, in SW Texas.
Moab is definitely a great spring break destination, though, both for climbing/bouldering and backpacking. Where are y'all backpacking? I've done a few trips in the Needles (in Canyonlands NP) and it is very awesome. Have fun!

good point, scott. thanks.

Big Bend, TX sure didn't look like much of a bouldering destination when i was there.

However, there is a ton of good hiking to be had in the Moab area, so even though the bouldering might be less than ideal you can definitely hike a bunch in arches and canyonlands.

Thanks for looking out John and as big of a bummer as that should sound thats great! hahah maybe after a half day I can convince everyone to do some real climbing. Bouldering is fun and all but, I'm pouring too much money into my gear to let it sit in my pack.

Would perhaps Joe's be a better destination? I'm going to the City of Rocks a few weeks after that so it really doesn't matter.

We haven't gotten that far into planning yet Scott haha. Possibly the Reef, Canyonlands does look like a blast though .

I hear you John but, there isn't much I can do without a partner. I just want to get out and live a bit, can't be awful. I try to make the best of it.

Go to Joe's.

Much better place to spend more then a day.

No matter how hard you climb you can be bored at big bend boulders (moab) in about 6 hours. I usually just stop there on my way home from the creek or mill.

I think the entire group woudl have more fun at joe's anyways. Still hiking and much much better climbing with lots lots more ;)

Moab will have WAY better hiking than anything around Joe's Valley.

The bouldering at Big Bend is really fun but not extensive. I would have a plan for climbing somewhere else on the second and third days in case you are bored with BB.

Thanks guys I guess we're still heading for Moab. I think the mates want to party more than anything else.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
