Go to archives and download shows that you've been to. I have pretty much ever show I have seen on my ipod. Brings back good memories and ones to look forward to as well.

Check out some Yonder Mountain String Band.

One of my recipes for desert driving:

2 cups Gorillaz,
1 cup Beck
A pinch or two of West Coast G-Funk
1/4 cup each of Ennio Morricone's, The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly theme song, The Ectasy Of Gold, and Wild Horses ; add more according to taste.

Mix well.

OK... Jay Knower keeps all of his 100 points! Great suggestion for Ayan Rand; Atlas Shrugged is one of my all time favorites. I am always amazed to find out who has this book in their library. If you can afford it, and find them; some Patrick O'Brian books would be pretty cool too.

I'm psyched about our upcoming cross-country trip because I have the following to listen to:

Team of Rivals, by Doris Kearns Goodwin
Dreams from My Father, Barack Obama
The Last Lecture, Randy Pausch
The Street Lawyer, John Grisham.

Björk
Goldfrapp
Dandy Warhols
Massive Attack
Portishead
Cardigans

I enjoyed Atlas Shrugged more than The Fountainhead - more action, less talk, I suppose.

We listened to a lot while on the road, but the one book that stood out was "The Audacity of Hope"--Barak Obama. Others audiobooks, well, spoken word, that helped were those by Henry Rollins. The man is a poet, a scholar, a philosopher and a punk legend balled into one great amalgam of audible ear candy. Those selections made the hours seem like minutes.

As far as music goes, I don't think we could've survived driving through the monotony of the upper midwest without a lot of Death Cab for Cutie, Bonobo, Cut Chemist, David Byrne, Interpol, Scissor Sisters, and a healthy mix of classic rock that ranged from Black Sabbath to Journey, from Neil Young to the Police.

We're leaving to come back East in 3 days, and I'm going to take Jay's advise and get a little Ayn Rand for the drive.

Woah... that's the gayest list of music that I've ever read.

A little off track, but here in Denver we've got a new Alternative station at 101.5 that is kicking 93.3's ass. Aside from the latest, they regularly throw in the kind of old punk tracks you'd only hear on a college station.

Most people just think of Zappa as that "Yellow Snow" guy. Truth is he was probably the greatest musician of that era. He always surrounded himself with the very best musicians you never heard of, and then brought out from them their best work. I was in the front row of his last Denver appearance. He may very well have been a better guitarist than all the 'gods" of his day (Beck, Clapton, Page, etc), but his composition skills kind of hid that aspect. But I have never seen fingers move like that, or bend the way they did.

Some newer stuff I recently fell into: Amplify John Brown's Body and Only by the Night King's of Leon.

Amplify is roots based with a pop twist. Really good dance music, so put it in during the straight, flat parts in the road.

I just picked up the latest King's. Haven't fully formed an opinion of the entire LP, but the first three songs are a great start.

If you like good rock, but just a tinge of darkness, try Toad the Wet Sprocket's P.S. (A Toad Retrospective). I saw Glen Phillips at the Soiled Dove a few years ago and got up close, wanted to see if there were any slash marks on his wrists. Can't say for sure, too many bandages.

And of course, Tool. 10,000 Days . The lyrics to Rosetta Stoned are hilarious. "E to the mother fuckin T".

Then there's the record that plays in our heads when we turn off the music. Do you like the playlist or is it too quiet up in there? Do the tracks step all over each other? Would your own mother crash the stage or demand a refund at the concert that is your brain?
