Open Letter to the Douchebags who Trundled a Giant Rock onto my Head (Guideline 1 is out the window)

Exactly my thoughts. Trundling to me means it was dropped intentionally, usually just for the glory of making a big crash. Most trundlers don't even consider that there might be someone below them.

Daniel,

I agree with PRRose.

The fact that you start your complaint with this slur taints your entire post and makes people less likely to care what you have to say.

I thought "Faggot" was the name of Miles Mellows dog in T.E.S.
He was calling the guy a gay-mans kick-dog.
Or maybe Daniel is a Brit and he was referring to the fact that the speed climbers were smoking cigerettes.

Urban slang for "faggotry"...from wiktionary

(pejorative, slang) The quality of being unwanted or unexpected.

Seems that the passing party was A) unwanted B) Unexpected & therefore preformed an act of faggotry.

douchebaggery (plural douchebaggeries)

1. (slang) Blatant stupidity, ignorance, or insolence.

Daniel,

I wish you would have mentioned in your first post that you were on route and then passed, that's something entirely different, particularly, if you asked them not to pass. Is this the case? If so, that sucks and I apologize for my earlier comments. I'm now sympathetic.

Perhaps what we should think about is that if we ban, for lack of a better term, the word "Faggot", then someone is likely to come up with words like "Turd Tickler", "Butt Pirate", "Queer", or "Frenchman".
Getting rid of the word won't erase the attitude. It will only make it easier to ignore the history behind the attitude. George Carlin did a great bit on this talking about "Handicapped" vs "Handicapable" and "Shellshock" becoming "Post Conflict Stress Disorder"

Turd Tickler, that is hilarious! I would have loved to have heard the thread that j fasset's golf ball might have caused. Much like this thread, that would have produced some entertaining comedy.

As we have learned from a past leader in Boulder; there is a term of endearment also meant by a certain word. Previously I had not known this. But, coming from a person of great intellect and in such a well spoken community, I know now. Thanks again, Boulder, for setting such a high mark and leading the way in exemplary behavior.

PRRose wrote: Are you suggesting that faggot and derivatives are not offensive?

I'm suggesting that the definition of such words have changed over time. It's sort of like stating that something is Gay, or "ghey". It it commonly used in fun and with zero cruel intentions.

It's not like Daniel was standing at a Gay Rights Parade yelling "Faggot" and throwing tomatoes. Now that would be horrendous and atrocious behavior.

So, for me, the post was harmless. A bit of a rant which was harmless.

So, PRRose I appreciate your efforts to keep us in line. Truly I do. In fact when when my daughter was young I gave her a small test about the way she was to speak.

The test: Would you say (it/that) in front of your grandmother?

Something we could all probably live by.

The latest generation of kids is giving me hope that I'll live to see the day when these petty bigotries are things of the past.

I agree with Paz. Trivializing phrases that have caused so much physical and emotional harm to large segments of our society should always be discouraged and never made light of.

Paz,

Why did you remove your post? I thought what you said was important.

Well said Ken.

PRRose wrote:There are many derivatives of "nigger" as well ("nigger rich", for example)--would you use that expression at work, church, or in a classroom? Furthermore, the wiktionary entry identifies "faggotry" as pejorative--i.e., it is a slur. I don't think it gets much clearer than that.

Even the word "niggardly" has come under assault (meaning: stingy or miserly) since it sounds like a racial slur.

See Niggling Doubts for an interesting essay on the subject of word usage, modern-day censorship of free speech, and political correctness.

You've done it now, Ron Olsen. The *audacity* to link to a National Review essay in an MP forum! It's unapproved! They say conservative things at National Review. You need to be reprogrammed. But it won't happen because the vigilant guardians most likely to undertake the urgent task are about to meet a violent end. Yes, sad to say, certain heads held stiffly erect in your own city are about to explode over this outrage, probably as a result of their jerking knees dislodging and striking their foreheads with lethal force. Ironic that climbers should go out that way...

Say, didn't you used to have a Boulder zip code? I mean, Broomfield did used to be a part of Boulder County didn't it? You better be aawwwffuuullly careful next time you're up for re-election.

John, just take your lessons from where this committee does its periodic review, Boulder; the land of tolerance & liberalism, as long as you agree with what they say.

PRRose wrote: Ron, "Niggardly" does not derive from "nigger" and is not a slur. However, "faggotry" is derived from "faggot", derives its meaning from "faggot", and is also a slur. Regarding the National Review...aren't those the kind of assholes renaming french fries and getting their panties in a wad over whether Rachel Ray is a crypto-terrorist?

I am well aware that "niggardly" is not derived from "nigger" and is not a racial slur. But uneducated people, hearing the word and not understanding its meaning, have taken offense, and people using the word have been censured by their workplace superiors for using it.

As for the National Review, I thought the essay in question was well written and a good discussion of how careful we must be these days to avoid offending others, with government sanctions against creating a hostile workplace environment.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
