Anyone got beta on Cabo? I will be down there for a week, next month, and was thinking about hauling some gear down there if there is anything to climb. Please share...
Thanks.

Bring a surfboard and a flyrod and forget about climbing.

The only climbing I saw around the immediate area, was on a small peninsula extending out from the town. Typically one would take the quick and cheap five minute boat ride to get out there, which gives some great site seeing. You could also hike in. There is some bouldering out there, as well as some sport and traditional routes with severely rusted looking hardware. This was over a year ago though, and the conditions may have changed since then. Also, the friction on the sea rock was awful because of the salt deposits. I actually saw a clip in a video showing a woman climbing one of the sport routes. Quite picturesque! It was a so-called "extreme," video I saw on I-Max.

the above are some links to videos of climbing in cabo...on Jo Kinder's site he states that there is some good bouldering around the baja, but it is hard to find & very secret.

The 4th link has a great article about the climbing in Cabo.

I'll hopefully be heading there this spring...probably more surfing than climbing though, but I always bring my shoes!!!

Was also near the start of the Everest IMAX flick. Aracelli climbing with bolted on holds. Purty, but, obviously contrived with the fake holds, too.

There's a little near Lover's Beach, which is the rocky peninsula near the famous arch. Need to take a water taxi to get there. Dont really have much than that for ya, but enjoy.

Why climb when you can go to The Office?

I just got back from a (non-climbing) trip around the cape. FWIW I saw 3 or 4 bolted routes out on the point at Los Frailes on the east cape. One has badly rusted bolts. The others looked newer. All were pretty short. At a guess (I didn't climb them) the newer looking climbs were all under 5,10.

Jeff,

I saw a few routes with chains at the Lover's Beach area. If nothing else, it is a fun place to boulder on the beach for an afternoon. We drove to the hotel parking at the base of the peninsula with the arch and hiked out. It involves some scrambling but it's no big deal. I found that the rock varied from crumbly and worthless to totally solid.

We scrambled all the way out above the arch which involves some route finding and easy climbing. I thought it was a better way to spend a day in Cabo than being in town. That place feels like southern CA.

If you are going to leave Cabo, I enjoyed a small town called Cabo Pulmo (sp?). It's east of Cabo on the Gulf side and hosts an international marine park. We snorkeled next to sea lions and ate $8 shrimp dinners on the beach. (no climbing) Be aware that there are no phones (READ - no credit cards) and there is no way to get cash within an hour so make sure you bring enough. You can rent snorkeling gear there and guided scuba and snorkeling is available.

In general I didn't find southern Baja to be much cheaper than traveling in the western US.

There is a good sea stack(the Bishop) maybe 40 feet tall swimming distance from the Lovers Beach (Playa de Amor). You can rent a boat to get to it or put gear in garbage bags and swim with it. I remember it as being easy 5.4 or so. I climbed it with a big group and it was starting to get real crowded on the summit with only 2 or 3 climbers, so one climber jumped from the top. After the jump, boats started circling the spire and photographers came out of nowhere with everyone urging us to jump. Nobody else jumped, I think we downclimbed. It was a great experience for us.

Thanks for the information. Those pictures are nice. Might not be worth taking a rope and gear...maybe a chalk bag and some shoes will do the trick.

Thanks Again.

Was there in 2004. Bolts are really bad! The rock is extremely course and will rip your hands to shreds! Tape! If you can find a place to park near the Playa Grande you can walk to lovers beach and save cash. Just walk right through the resort and act like you know what you're doing. Hit the beach and take a left. Scramble some boulders, pass divorce beach and you're there.
Hit Las Quessadillas for food/drinks- you can't miss it, it's the colorful building on the main road through town.
Don't piss off the cops- we were "going too fast over a speed bump" and it cost us $75 in bribe money. grrr.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
