Look up MP contributor C Miller, and send him an email. Even after having been there, it can be a bit confusing, and noone knows the place better than he.

Robert, the following tips are for using the Van Dusen Canyon Approach. I'm not sure which direction you will be coming from so I'll do my best.

If you're coming from Fawnskin on Hwy 38 head east just after you pass a large construction/logging yard on your right start slowing down as Van Dusen Rd (3N09) will sneak up on your on your left pretty quick. It is marked by a 2' x 4' sign. From that junction it looks like a residential road. It is not paved.

If you are coming from Lucerne Valley you will be coming up using Hwy 18 (which is the same as Hwy 38 coming from the west - go figure). Same routine as you head west. Just after passing the 18/38 cut off that will drop you down to Big Bear Lake or Big Bear city you will rapidly be approaching the Van Dusen Canyon Rd which will be on your right. If you see the large construction/logging yard you've gone too far. Turn around.

Take Van Dusen Canyon Rd north until it terminates at a T intersection with many white painted rocks. You've got two choices from there.

Central Pinnacles - Go Right at the T-intersection or east on 3N16 for a few miles until you see forest service road 3N32 on your left. FS 3N32 is is dirt and deeply rutted in some areas. You will not require 4X4 but high clearance is recommended. Take 3N32 north for 1.1 miles you will see a small cairn at the junction of another small dirt road on your left heading west. Take this road as it narrows for several hundred yards. You will see various parking on both the left and right hand side of the road. If you've got the clearance and not a super wide truck continue on as you pass through two fairly large boulders. Shortly thereafter you will see a large parking lot on your left which is the main area for the Central Pinnacles Area.

Lost Orbit Rocks - Go left (west) at the T-intersection on 3N16 past a small campground to 3N07 which will be on your right. Follow this road north a short distance and be sure to watch the forest service road signs as the road will cut off right - stay on 3N07. (If you keep going north the service road actually turns into 3N43 which will ultimately loop you all the way around to the Central Pinnacles Area. That loop is considered the John Bull Jeep Trail - High Clearance mandatory!) Staying on 3N07 until it dead ends at obvious small parking lot. There are a few routes directly in front of the parking lot on aptly named "parking lot rock" - Walking north a few minutes will gain you Lost orbit rock.

You can walk between Lost Orbit & Central Pinnacles although I have never done it myself.

Either destination it's pretty easy to find the crags and routes. Some routes are listed here on MP and you can typcially see the line and determine what the grade may be. I've been fortunate to always have a guide with me but I trust you could make due without.

Equada Outfitters is located in Big Bear - equada pete should have a guide and other beta that may be of assistance or try calling Pete at 909-866-6186

The rock is a beautiful coral/pink color, well bolted and always has anchors.

Enjoy!

~Susan
