Description
Grumari beach is arguably one of Rio's most beautiful beaches, and is also host to many excellent multi-pitch routes on great granite by Rio standards. There are cracks, slabs, delicated balance-y holds, huge boulder sectors and most of all, killer vistas of Rio's nicest ocean side.
The Velho Oeste sector has potential for many new FAs, with routes maxing out at around 700ft. The hike in for the first route is just under 10 minutes, and a 60m rope is sufficient for rappelling.
During the winter, most sectors are shaded until noon. Coastal crag sectors are shaded in the afternoon! You can combo two sectors for a full day of climbing.
There are also many sea facing walls with sport-ish routes ranging from 30ft to 200ft, with plenty of trad climbing. Be warned that these might be sensitive to sea levels, check the forecast before visiting them.
Getting There
Grumari has mid to terrible mobile reception. You will likely be able to Uber your way in from somewhere where there's reception, and if you negotiate with restaurants in the Grumari beach, they can get you Wi-Fi to Uber yourselves out. Otherwise, the walk/hike to Grumari is considered one of the prettiest in Rio and is not to be missed. Many people cycle and trail run it daily.
To get to the Velho Oeste sector, the hike in for the first route is just under 10 minutes.
Drive to the Mirante entre Prainha e Abricó Google Maps waypoint [1]. Alternatively, see the Wikiloc trail [2] as well for directions.
