Description
Portalet sits at the head of Valle de Tena, right on the Spanish-French border, just below the iconic Midi d’Ossau. The climbing here is alpine in character, with fast access to granite and limestone walls in a high-mountain setting. Altitude is around 1,800–2,000 m, so it’s a great summer option when lower crags are too hot.
Expect short approaches, quality rock, and a mix of well-bolted multi-pitch routes and more adventurous lines. The area also offers quick-drying walls and stunning views across to Ossau. While it’s not a huge sector, Portalet delivers solid climbing in a wild, exposed setting — perfect for those looking to get on mountain terrain without long approaches or big commits.
Best season: summer to early autumn.
Getting There
The Portalet area is located at the upper end of Valle de Tena, right on the Spanish–French border, at Collado de Portalet (1,794 m). It’s easily accessible by road and requires no long approaches or 4x4 access.
- From Spain:
Drive up the A-136 from Biescas through Panticosa and Sallent de Gállego. The road ends at the Collado de Portalet, where there’s parking on the Spanish side just below the border pass. - From France:
Cross the border via Col du Pourtalet from the Ossau valley (Laruns). The road is usually open in summer but can be closed in winter due to snow. - Parking:
Several small parking areas are available near the pass, close to the base of the climbs. Approaches are generally short (5–30 min). - Access note:
No permits or special access rules, but weather can change fast — this is exposed, high-alpine terrain. Be prepared.
