Description
The Pierre du Moëllé (at 1661m) is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps between Leysin and Lak de l’Hongrin. The location has a remote feel to it and on a clear day has tremendous views of the pre-Alps and Alps all the way to Mont Blanc. High mountain pastures with happy cows…it’s a great scene!
Tour de Famelon 2138m (7013 ft) towers above the climbing area. A popular hiking path passes by and through the area.
West of this pass on a road/trail is the namesake climbing area. The area consists of 5 sectors:
- Rochers de la Latte - 14 routes from 3c+ to 5b+ with several 3 to 5 pitch routes and longer 22m single pitches.
- Chouette (Owl) - 29 options from 3b to 6b+ on a 12 to 20m south-facing cliff.
- Chien qui dort (sleeping dog) - 18 routes from 3c to 6b.
- Grandes cannelures – 6 routes 5c to 6b.
- Grande evasion - 13 routes 3c to 6b+.
There is a restaurant at the pass and a CAS hut Chalet Lacombe very nearby as a self-catering lodging option.
At an elevation of 1720m, the best seasons would typically be May through September.
Getting There
The possible drive up from Hongrin Lake is sometimes closed as the area especially to the north and east of the pass is used by the Military for practice. Shooting notices are posted online at:
vtg.admin.ch/fr/1201-050-fr
Under the heading: Place du Petit Hongrin – avis de tirs at:
leysin.ch/infos-publiques-2/
The pass itself and the road/trail to the climbing area as well as the climbing area are apparently kept open to the public even during artillery practice.
Drive up from Aigle. Take route 11 for 15.2km to La Comballaz. Take a left (sign for the restaurant “La Pierre Moëllé) and follow Le Gîte then a right onto Audon through the forest then up to the pass in 4.1km. These roads are skinny single tracks! The road is paved.
Park in the parking lot below the restaurant.
Follow the white-red-white painted flag road/trail to the crag. Trail #46 which plots a course between the pass and Leysin goes right by Chouette and under the Rochers de la Latte sectors.
Hike in takes around 35 minutes, give or take. Make sure to close all gates and give any momma cows a wide berth.
