Description
Disclaimer: The rock here at the Leap is incredibly fun climbing. It is full of steep moves on horizontal pockets, juggy roofs, in-cut edges and tons of friction all at fun moderate grades. This place is sure to put a smile on your face! With that said it is also possibly some of the worst rock around and maybe not the safest place for the inexperienced. Even tightly bolted sport routes in this area can provide a real risk of rockfall. Please consider helmets, be mindful of placements and use caution with what you pull and step on. This isn’t meant to discourage or discredit as countless hours have been spent by anyone developing the Leap to try to eliminate hazards. Just know they still exist.
Whiskey Wall has a handful of fun, moderate mixed routes all accessible with a single 70m rope. The two-bolt rap station at the top of O.L.S and Furry Friends will provide you with access to the second two-bolt rap station for the two pitch routes YPLAA and Tears in the Wind. It is possible to stay on rappel to clip this second anchor. A single bolt at the base of YPLAA and Tears in the Wind provides a safe belay stance for the start of both climbs. The stance at the base of YPLAA and Tears in the wind can be a little unstable so staying tied in is recommended. There's no option to walk out from the base of these climbs, the only way to exit is to climb back out.
Getting There
The Whiskey Wall area is located on the northern part of Apache Leap, north of The Divide and the Hall of Legends. These routes are only accessible from the top of the cliff. From the Mine parking area, hike to the dirt road, follow it to the left up and over a steep hill. Look for a large cairn marking a trail off right as you approach the concrete pad (this is the same approach as for the Hall of Legends area). Follow the cairns past the Magma climbing area as it crosses left, and then back right, across the drainage. Just before the trail crosses the drainage back left again, look for cairns out right (west) in the direction of a large finger of rock near the ridgeline (33.2926389, -111.0764722). The trail crosses just under and to the right of this formation. This will take you along the edge of the Leap escarpment. Follow cairns along ridge to the right (north) until the trial drops around left (west) and heads down to the top of the climbs. The total approach time is approximately 40min at a casual pace. Once at the cliff look cairns mark a two-bolt rap station (33.29363, -111.07845) with chains down and left of the trail. Look closely, all hardware has been painted to minimize impact. Rap this with a single 70m to access the base of O.L.S., Furry Friends and the second rap station for both two pitch routes just north.
