Description Suggest change

This small boulder is located high on Tom’s Thumb Trail at roughly 3600+ft elevation.   The crag sits roughly 100 ft off of the main trail and access is easy with minimal to no bushwhacking. Handsome boulder gets morning shade on the south side an afternoon shade on the north and can be climb-able even on summer mornings. There’s a handful of both interesting crack and face climbs.  Maybe not a destination by itself, but a good crag to stop at on your way up, or down, from other areas.   Rock quality is fair to good.

As of 12/1/24 there is just one set of bolts on top of the boulder; hangers only without chains.   The anchors are solid but not really conveniently placed to top rope any of the climbs on the crag.   If you want to set up a good master point you’ll need up 50ft of static cord.

Routes are listed starting with Scramble and moving clockwise around the boulder.   All routes, with the exception of Arriba Dirt Cheap, are on the north side of the boulder.

Getting There Suggest change

Follow Tom’s Thumb trail to Prairie Falcon Overlook.   Turn right and go to the top of the overlook.   There’s a small climber’s access trail that leads to handsome boulder about 100 ft below.   Handsome boulder, and specifically the route “scramble“ can be seen from the top of the overlook.

approximately 1.4 miles with 900 ft elevation gain on a good trail.
