Description
Many have known this glacial erratic existed in Holbrook Town forest via Google images, and though sought after by many local boulder hounds, it's gone "unfound" until winter 2024, where a shed hunter tipped us off to its location.
Upon inspection, we quickly realized it's been an OG hangout in previous lifetimes: between the '90s plastic climbing hold drilled into a nearby tree (see the photo) and a handful of axed-down trees in the landing zones. That said, it appears largely unclimbed given the breakage endured during the scrubbing efforts and subsequent projecting thereafter.
The rock quality: typical gneiss with heavy texture. There are loads of features that provide astounding movement. This unicorn block ranges from 11 - 18 feet in height and is roughly 40 feet end-to-end. It has great landing zones, and an easy downclimb affords the solo boulderer little trouble. This is a local gem for ages to come.
The lines: so far, roughly 15 lines exist on the boulder (coming soon to MP) ranging from V0-V10ish. There may be more link-ups, eliminates, and creative one movers, but the meat of it has been developed.
Getting There
TOTAL APPROACH time: 2 minutes.
Parking coordinates are: 42.1676201, -70.9855980.
Boulder coordinates are: 42.1687456, -70.9847360.
Driving: enter the power lines trail from Weymouth Street, passing through the metal swinging gate (which is NEVER closed). Follow the power lines 200 yards, turn left as they do, and continue another 200 yards until you see a pull off on your left. Park here! (There is room for about 6 cars.)
The boulder is 200 yards across the street from the parking area, just into the woods (cut right as you pass the rusty chassis). You can access from a newly blazed mountain bike trail JUST left of the parking area OR from 50 yards right of the parking area through a discrete cut-in trail.
See the photo “parking and approach” for a visual.
IF PARKING UNDER THE POWERLINES BECOMES AN ISSUE, THERE IS PARKING ON WEYOMUTH STREET FOR ROUGHTLY SIX CARS, AND AGAIN YOU CAN ALWAYS DROP PADS AT THE BOULDER AND GO PARK ON THE STREET. THE HIKE IN IS ABOUT 12-15 MINUTES.
Per Michael Diiorio: a police officer told me that it's actually illegal to park past the gate, and doing so would result in a $500+ dollar fine for motor vehicle trespassing. He recommended continuing to park on the shoulder of Weymouth Street.
