Description
Riverwood is a Westerly Land Trust property located in Westerly, RI (South County). An old quarry used to exist on the south end where the better quality rock used to be and I believe what remained (the bouldering) was not quarried because the rock was of lower quality (more rotten and crumbly). Their is a fair amount of bouldering although the rock is a bit on the poor side and the skin often fails long before the muscles and if you want a longer session then bringing tape is not a bad idea. Holds should always be viewed with caution. The best quality rock and climbing is at the sub area called The Beehive on the red western trail. The Westerly land trust has not openly voiced an opinion on climbing so keep it as low key as possible so it stays that way. Most of the bouldering is fairly tall so a pad or two is recommended.
Side Note: this area is swamped with ticks in the summer as a forewarning.
Getting There
The official entrance is on Boy Scout Drive on the northern end. If you are going in with pads I do not recommend entering here. It requires walking down a road past many houses. Some of these home owners are not so keen on the public use of Riverwood thus the reason why public parking is so far from that actual entrance. I would guess that these same people have no idea what a bouldering pad is and would take a very suspicious interpretation. There is an unofficial entrance on the south side with parking for about 3-5 cars next to and behind a guard rail. Long before the Westerly Land Trust acquired the property (used to be called the Ski Trails because people cross country skied here) this was the entrance. Its Unofficial because you have to cross the train tracks. People still use this entrance, but be respectful and cautious.
When approaching the boulders, be sure to stay on the trails as best as possible and minimize any impact to native vegetation in the woods. This area is open to more development, but be sure to keep brushing impact to a minimum and do not destroy any flora to create space for a climb. This land belongs to the land trust and we need to do our part to leave it better than when we walked in.
