Description Suggest change

Well-named Lookout Peak is the sentinel that rises 1900 feet above Ophir Pass west of Silverton. There are multiple routes up the south face beginning from just below the pass, ranging in difficulty from third class to easy fifth. Much of the rock is shattered, and great care is necessary on these scrambles. Despite the dubious rock quality, summiters are rewarded by a magnificent 360 degree panorama of dozens of San Juan 13ers and 14ers and of beautiful Columbine Lake a thousand feet below to the east.

Getting There Suggest change

Five miles north of Silverton on US 550, turn west onto the Ophir Pass Road. Proceed about 4 miles to a small parking area on the north side of the road. This is about 300 yards short of the pass. In a passenger car, I made it to the large switchback about a half mile below this and probably could have gone the whole way to the trailhead. The road does become rockier just before the pass, and it is consistently steeper and rougher on the Ophir side.
