Description
Los Cotos is made up of three sub areas: Cotos Bajas, Cotos Medios & Cotos Altos. These areas offer a wonderful alternative to much of the rest of the climbing in El Chorro. Slabby, smooth, subtly featured white/grey limestone is a great contrast to the steep and strenuous climbing found elsewhere. Los Cotos, whilst one of the first areas to be developed in El Chorro, has become a bit of an overlooked and forgotten crag, making for a combination of quiet cragging but with some old and dubious bolts in places (the local guidebook recommends bringing a small set of nuts to supliment some of the older routes. Dont be put off by that though, there has been some updating of hardwear, mostly on the higher quality routes meaning there are plenty of safe high quality routes here.
Getting There
A series of paths leads behind the main Frontales area wall. These are the descent routes for many of the popular multipitches here including Amptrax. Find these trails by following the road heading from the town of El Chorro towards the Gorge of the Camino del Rey to an ice cream stand. 6ooft beyond here there is a terraced path that leads uphill towards the train tracks. Go up some wooden steps that lead over the railway tunnel and onto the hill above. From here you'll need to follow feint paths generally heading north east towards a scree slope leading to a small notch in the ridgeline above (this is not visible until you are up high). Once through the notch the trail continues north towards El Makinodromo. From Makinodromo you can follow the path over the train tracks and around the prow of El Polvorin, following the river around and up hill to Los Cotos. Althernatively you could explore and off-trail cross country approach from the notch and avoid the Makinodromo/Polvorin tour by hiking 0.5km north west from here. You might be thinking, wow thats a long and tedious approach by El Chorro standards and you'd be correct, which is why most climbers opt for the illegal approach by hopping the fence between Los Albercones and Castrojo areas at the foot of Frontales and walking through the train tunnel.
