Description
Thompson Pk is part of the Diamond mountain range which comprises the northern most edge of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Its Northeast face rises 1,100ft above the Forest floor and has an almost continuously 45 degree or greater slope. There are many gullies and ridgelines one can take up the face. All are similar in steepness and difficulty except for the North gully which sits on the far right side of the Northeast face. This area is easily spotted by the unmistakable “Toms Wart” a prominent plug of rock which dominates the skyline. To its left sits a gully which is filled with steep coulars and ice. Most of the lines have never been climbed. There are seasonal steep ice and mixed routes here waiting to be done.
Getting There
The approach, which is long and difficult in winter keeps this face from being a popular destination. A steep climb through thick woods to the ridgeline, and a couple miles of deep wind swept snow along the ridge will get you to the start of the climbs.
Private property blocks a direct approach, so one is forced to start up from the Janesville grade road to the ridgeline. Traverse the ridge and drop down around to the face for the main routes climbing up to the lookout tower.
For the North Gully routes, follow the ridgeline over the peak and drop down a snow slope to the North (right) of Tom’s Wart. Traverse the base of the massive walls to the gully and pick your route. The routes in this steep section can exceed 60 degrees and vary greatly depending on conditions. There are several ice flows that form here from time to time in the right conditions. None have any known ascents.
