Description
The historic village of White Rock is a community set deep in the hills on the N. Fork Tye River just off of 56 past Massie's Mill. Interestingly, this developing area is just down the mountain from the Forest bouldering at White Rock Gap. Development will begin along Durham Run off of N. Fork Rd. along a FS access road. The rock type is a mixture of greenstone, granite, and quartzite, being heavy on the quartz side. The first area I am working on his home to steep riverside climbs that are riddled with sculpted edges, slopers, and even (and this is very rare for the area) quartz rails! Mostly boulders, but definitely potential for some cragging. More on that. This is not like sharp Old Rag granite, it is much kinder on skin.
Getting There
Drive up 56 until you get to a fork in the road past Tyro. Take the N. Fork for about 2 miles and on your right there will be a pulloff and a gated entrance to the National Forest via an FS road along Durham Run. Park at the obvious pulloff and walk up the FS road for maybe a quarter mile, if that. The first area of development is on the left with a big obvious outcropping.
