Description

This zone on the far west side of Elephant Rock was created during two large rockfall incidents that occurred here in 1970 and 1971. There has been more recent rockfall here since, including one event in 2006. It is quite visible from the road as being predominantly fresh-looking white rock above a sloping ramp feature. It hosts several phenomenal pitches, but is a bit of a pain to access. Trust me, it's worth the fuss to get to.

Getting There

This area can be accessed by approaching directly from the road with some mellow boulder hopping across the Merced (during low water) and slogging directly up the scree field. Once at the base of the cliff a ~90m simulable pitch of 5.5 heads up the large ramp to a single bolt below a 30 ft 5.10+ pitch to an anchor at the base of the routes. The ramp felt pretty dirty and loose so I do recommend roping up for this, even if it seems way easy. There was a fixed rope on the 10+ micropitch when I was there, which was nice to use for access to the proper anchor at the base of the routes.  A single full 40m rap gets you from the proper anchor down the side to the base of the ramp feature into non-technical terrain to descend.

Alternatively one can approach from above, but it is difficult to find the correct location to rappel in.  There is a two bolt anchor up there 100m above the base of the routes.
