Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closure at Newhalem Crags March 1st to mid-July
Details
Peregrine falcons select nest sites on cliffs in the Upper Skagit Valley, including the Climbing Management Areas of Newhalem West (Ryan’s Wall) and Newhalem East. As required in the NPS Superintendent’s Compendium, these areas will be closed to all public from March 1st to July 15th of each year, or until the young falcons have fledged or NPS staff have determined that nesting will not occur on a specific wall during this period. Access Fund, Washington Climbers Coalition and NPS partner on a volunteer raptor monitoring program to determine nesting activity. Contact the NPS and/or WCC for updates.
Description
Located to the climbers right of La Petit Cheval, this feature nearly blends with the hillside if looking at it straight on. The feature consists of three panels of roughly equal length.
Getting There
Other routes may exists, but the approach starts at the Hairpin and is "off trail" for the duration. Cross the small stream and head up the hillside NE. The approach start bushy but thins out a few hundred feet up the hill. Another brushy section as you cross the first of two drainages. A mix of traversing and uphill travel should keep the grade fairly mellow. We cut through the second (not brushy) drainage around 6100 feet through a mellow section. Once you see the full feature, you will likely be looking directly at the second panel. We dropped packs on the ridge just before dropping down to the start of the first panel, and this gave us a good reference point for the decent.
