Description
Klimmur Spaarnwoude is a large, free-standing concrete structure located a bit northwest of downtown Amsterdam. It is located in a large park and adjacent to an indoor ski area (yes, you can ski in the Netherlands). The structure has two sides (east and west) with routes on both aspects. If you don't want to lead, the top of many of the climbs can be reached by scrambling up from the south end of the formation. Every route is protected by bolts and there are anchors atop all routes. A sign at the north end of the formation lists the route names and grades on both sides.
The faces of the structure are comprised of concrete panels that are roughly a meter square. The panels replicate sections of cliff in Belgium. Apparently the designers of the structure went to Belgium and made molds of sections of cliff, which were then cast in concrete. The panels are repeated on the structure, but sometimes turned at different angles. Look closely and you will see the repetition of the panel features across the wall. This is a pretty amazing climbing resource for a city with no real outdoor possibilities. It would be great to see this model instituted in cities around the globe.
The structure is located at 52.447999, 4.677375.
Getting There
You can park in the parking lot for the indoor ski area, located at 52.449730, 4.677662. From the parking lot, walk along the right side of the huge building to the bike shop. Turn right and go through a gate in the fence and then up a short, paved path about 50 meters. You'll then see the structure directly in front of you. Total approach distance via this route is about 225 meters.
Alternatively, you can park just west of the climbing structure at 52.448520, 4.675521. From this parking spot, it's about 130 meters to the structure.
The structure is located at 52.447999, 4.677375, amid a large, mowed grass area.
