Description
Upper Pine Creek has a wonderful, secluded collection of glacial polished, granite erratics with one boulder of dark, mafic rock. Tucked away in a nice pine forest with the sounds of Pine Creek rumbling in the distance, it is a great area to get in a solid circuit or to do a few problems and just enjoy the solitude.
All of these boulders were developed over a period of two days, day one I was solo, day two Austen Andersen came and finished up what I couldn't do alone. The last problem sent was a project on the Tumor Boulder that we all had tried over the years, then Dave Ludders finally got it. There might be more boulders up the trail for those willing to explore further. I explored up Pine Creek, and there is potential for hard, short, overhung sport climbs for those willing to make that happen.
Getting There
From the main stop light in Buena Vista, head north for approximately 12.9 miles on US Hwy 24, and turn left on CR 388. Follow the road for 0.7 miles to the Pine Creek Trailhead. This parking lot is used mostly for people doing over night camping up the glacial valley or to hit the local 14'ers from the path less traveled. Park accordingly if it's a busy weekend. The first 1/2 mile crosses private property, and a fee is needed to pay. Last time I checked, it was $4 for a car and a $1 more per 4 legged animal (people do ride horses there it seems, I have never seen anyone, just the horse droppings), so this means your dog or dogs.
The trail takes an old miner's road that has been improved by the local ranch or utility line workers in years past, and after you pass the power lines, the path turns to mostly single path with the occasional old road coming back. Follow the trail for 1.66 miles until you come to the Black Rock, a super unique, glacial erratic of mafic rock with a good number of classic lines. Not much further the main cluster of glacial polished, granite erratics come into view, more off to your left and the last good block at 1.76 miles from the trailhead.
