Description

Remnant's Tower (aka Defecating Monk) is a small, 1-2 pitch tower located on the ridgeline between Wedding Canyon and Fruita Canyon. Most people summit via the standard route, Squeeze Box.

Getting There

Two approaches exist:

1. First and most common is to park at the first major switchback/hairpin turn along Rim Rock Drive after entering through the west entrance to the park near Fruita. If you make it to Balanced Rock, you've missed it. There is room for one small car at the turn. Otherwise, park up canyon from the hairpin turn 1/4 mile at the next available pullout on the right, and walk back down the road. From the hairpin turn, look directly south, and the tower is easily seen. Hike down the gully and then up the hill to the tower. Avoid crypto. It is easily seen the entire approach. This takes 10-15 minutes.

2. You could take a longer approach from the Lower Monument Trailhead and hike the Wedding Canyon Trail to where it actually enters Wedding Canyon proper (heading west), then hike up easily on user trails to the tower. This ideal if you don't have/want to pay for a pass.

The standard route is north-facing.
