Description Suggest change

This area covers the long hillside of limestone cliffs littering a series of gullies on the south side of 157 that you pass by on your way up to Charleston. Unlike the more urban, eastern areas of the La Madre range, the climbing here is secluded and somewhat challenging to access.

Getting There Suggest change

All of the cliffs generally lie south of a large hill on the south side of 157 heading west to Mt. Charleston. Access can be tricky, as the network of dirt roads accessing the gullies have some motorized vehicle closures. Additionally, many of the roads are steep, uneven, and rocky, so a capable vehicle is required to get close. Parking along the highway is always an option, but this will add at least a mile to the approach for most of the crags.

Approved vehicle access points have changed as of 2024 as a result of enforced motorized vehicle closures. Following the driving directions below will keep visitors within Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area where many of the roads are still open for motorized use.

  • Drive about 1.8 miles past the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area sign where people are used to going, and turn left on Harris Springs Road (36.280104, -115.451057)

  • Drive about .39 miles down the gravel road and turn left into the wash

    • The wash is unmaintained but is mostly solid gravel characteristic of an ephemeral desert drainage

  • Drive about 1.5 miles down the wash and turn left at the cairn (36.281279, -115.425887)

  • Drive up the steep hill climb which maxes out at 20% grade

    • This is the most challenging part of the drive

  • Turn right at the top

  • From here you generally stick to the road closest to the edge of the wash; there is one steepish, very short, hill on this route, but if you made it this far you'll be fine.

    • You can also go left at the first "Y" intersection as an alternative route

A Google Earth map is posted in the photos.
