Description
A remote and stunning desert formation that begs to be climbed. Lots of loose rock and decent but not great quality sandstone.
Getting There
Drive south on the Scenic Drive and bear left into Capitol Gorge. Follow the dirt road to the end at a parking lot. This is the trailhead.
Hike on the Golden Throne Overlook Trail for 1.9 miles until you can clearly see the Golden Throne to the northeast, then leave the trail and head toward the feature. There is no obvious established route, but you'll notice a cliff band that you need to find a way through to get up to the strata on which the Golden Throne sits. Work through the cliff band, which for us required a single pitch (about 80 feet) of 5.4-5.5 climbing. There is a lot of loose rock at the top of this cliff band, so caution is advised.
Above the cliff band, hike uphill and aim for a smooth, beautiful sandstone saddle south of the Golden Throne. From here you can see the intimidating south face of the rock and the start of the Standard Route, which is in a large chimney/gulley system on the southwest corner.
