Description
Lava Butte is the prominent cinder cone east of Las Vegas and is composed of a light gray dacite that’s accrued a heavy layer of desert varnish turning the whole mountain dark brown. A couple of cliffs emerge from the steep talus covered slopes on the northwest and southwest sides. Most of the rock is solid but highly fractured and strewn with loose debris, especially the southwest cliffs.
Getting There
On Lake Mead Blvd 1.8 mi north of the LMNRA toll both is a large dirt parking area on the west side of the road with a kiosk. Follow the dirt road out the back of the parking area, past a wash, ignore the many small side roads, and at 0.9 miles stay left on Lava Butte Rd.
Lava Butte can also be approached from the Vegas Valley via Lava Butte Rd (accessed from south Hollywood Blvd) or via the power line road from the back of Lake Las Vegas. Access from Lake Las Vegas is spotty as much of the time there’s a locked gate.
