Description
The north face of Peak 5848 (Sky Island) is a 300-foot-tall barrelling wave of grey and gold Coconino sandstone. Rising high above Long Canyon, the wall hosts the route We Ride At Dawn and virtually no other crack systems.
Getting There
Park at Long Canyon Trailhead. Hike 2.8 miles up Long Canyon Trail until the trail makes a sharp right-hand turn at a minor red-bottomed wash. Leave the main trail here, turning left to walk up this wash for about 40 yards, looking for a faint yet well-marked path leading up and left into the forest. Carefully follow this cairned path uphill through the manzanita brush. There is a fixed rope to help you through one of the upper cliffbands. The final cliffbands are negotiated by long “end run” traverses. Total: 2 to 2½ hours.
