Description
A side canyon near the upper end of Beaver Creek Proper. There are several smaller crags along the drainage that hold a good selection of moderate single pitch routes on solid gray limestone. These crags have flat bases and are a good spot for hanging out and reasonably safe for kids. Higher up sit slabs of clean limestone that hold some fun moderate multipitch offerings. This drainage is secluded and has a remote feel with most routes less than 10 minutes from the car. Walls typically get morning shade and afternoon sun. As this is a new area some of the routes may still be cleaning up. With time and traffic any loose rock should disappear, but until then helmets, stick clips, caution when pulling on loose-looking features and wandering from the bolt lines are warranted. Routes are typically equipped with rappel rings or ramshorn lower-offs. While lowering is encouraged on the single pitch routes, please do not toprope through the fixed hardware.
An intermittent stream runs through the canyon. While the water is dry for most of the summer and can disappear for years during dry periods, expect a stream crossing or two in the spring or after heavy rain events. Several routes at the mouth of the canyon start from the creek bed and are inaccessible when the creek runs.
Getting There
Continue on the upper Beaver Creek Road past the Refrigerator Canyon Trailhead for about a 1 3/4 miles. Look for the USFS sign on your right (southeast) just before you cross the creek below the large outcrop of grey stone. Like many helpful signs on National Forest lands this is occasionally used as a target by other forest users, so it might be best to plan on other ways of identifying the right canyon to head up. If you get to the last bridge and private lands sign, you missed your turn. Park at the pullout across the road and hike up the canyon bottom/ stream bed.
