Description
Mavrovo is a premier outdoor destination located in the mountains of western North Macedonia. The area is a popular as hot spot for mountain biking, hiking, trekking, fly fishing, kayaking and most of all climbing during the summer. During wintertime, though not so popular, there is some ice climbing and dry-tooling routes and possibilities in the area. Aside from that the ski center provides a descent and amusing skiing story or you can explore the wild backcountry of Mavrovo enjoying some beautiful ski touring / backcountry skiing adventure.
Rock climbing is what you're looking for and you'll find a massive amount of potential in the area. This chapter of the vertical history is still in its infancy as of 2020 with around 55 routes ranging in grade from 5a to 9a+. The first crags to be develop were Mavrovo Cave and sector French. The limestone offers spectacular vertical faces, huge caves and overhanging walls. The climbing consists of tufas, crimps, pockets and jugs on well protected sport lines. The approaches are short in the scenery can't be beat.
The best choice for accommodating in Mavrovo as a climber is Ski Hut Gorica a climbing and skiing hut and hub for information. The owner is a mountain guide and climbing instructor Dimitar Popov within the Macedonian Sport Climbing Federation MSCF and he is the establisher of the climbing in Mavrovo is responsible fro the development and improvement of climbing routes and potential.
