Description
This often overlooked wall lies downhill from the Quaking Aspen Wall. While it doesn't get nearly the attention of the Tioga Wall proper, it is stacked with quality lines that would be at home on it's big brother up the hill. Like the Tioga Wall the Power Wall is composed of very high quality granite however the routes don't get nearly as much traffic so they sometime need a bit of cleaning. Also like the Tioga Wall the climbs range from techy slab to thugy steepness, often in the same pitch. Many of the routes are equipped with fixed chain draws.
This section of cliff is worth the extra few minutes of walking.
Getting There
The Power Cliff is situated directly downhill from the Quaking Aspen Wall. The climbs face down canyon so they cannot be seen from above however it is easy to locate because there is a massive steel electrical transmission tower sitting on top of the wall.
To get to the Power Cliff, follow the usual Tioga Cliff approach trail which begins at the paved turnout 8.2 miles up Highway 120 from US 395. Follow the well worn approach trail downhill passing the Tioga Wall (aka THE Cliff) to the Gold Wall. Once in the vicinity of the climb Eastside Elixir leave the well worn trail by making a left, heading downslope on fairly stable talus. There are hints of trails here but nothing substantial. Again, the Power Wall is easily identifiable because of the massive tower on top of it, however don't be confused by the other massive tower well down canyon. The approach from the Gold Wall to the Power Wall takes five to ten minutes max. While heading down the talus you will aim for what is the climber's right side of the Power Wall. You will know you are on the right path because you will find a short exposed traverse which is equipped with a fixed hand line to aid in the approach. Follow the hand line around to the skier's right and make your way down the usually muddy steps to talus below. Once you reach the talus turn around and you will be facing the Power Wall. You will easily be able to spot the fixed draws on the climbs to the left.
