Description
The Top Shelf is an incredible rock climbing area just outside of Spearfish. It boasts well over a dozen routes that qualify as being short, bouldery, power-endurance test pieces. With a difficulty spectrum that falls between fine nine minus and five thirteen plus, many classics for their respective grades reside at this BRAND NEW and slightly hard to access hardman's crag. It faces SSW so can be prime in colder (i.e. winter) weather when the sun touches the rock if there is minimal Southerly or Westerly winds.
Getting There
This hard-to-find crag is best found with some help. It's located about 10 minutes up canyon from Spearfish, above a water intake dam (for Spearfish's Hydropower). A fifth-class scramble, to a short wall - three hundred feet above the canyon floor - plus a spicy repel to exit, makes for an interesting session of climbing where the whole day is the crux.
