Description

Trombacco is a beautiful limestone sport climbing area with 63 bolted routes ranging from 5.4 to 5.12c with the bulk of the routes in the 5.10 and 5.11 grades and new ones still being added. The area has four sectors and is well signed. There is a clear fork in the 25 minute uphill approach trail with the left path leading to the D and A sectors and the right path to the B and C sectors. The base of the routes gets shade but the cliffs are pretty sunny and you can climb here all year except the coldest Winter days. The crag is at 1,500 feet in altitude and has beautiful views of the valley and villages below. Sector A has some very long routes such as Spiritella which is 115 feet long. Make sure to climb with a 60 meter cord here. The other sectors don't have any routes longer than 60 feet.

Getting There

La Rocchette is a little under 1 hour north of Lucca. From Lucca drive north on SS12 and then SP20 to get to the village of Gallicano. In Gallicano take SP39 out of town (in the direction of the the Fornovolasco Grotte) and follow it for about 6km (11 minutes). Park on the side of the road before a guardrail.

Look for a kiosk which has wooden sign with the name of the area and a map. The trail is supported by cement and is very obvious. Hike for 15-20 minutes steeply uphill on switchback first through trees then past a wall and an bench until you find a sign that says D-A | B-C and choose the direction of the crag you want to go to. Hike the last 5-10 minutes to the cliffs. If you move fast the whole hike should take less than 20 minutes. It is possible to walk to all the crags along the cliff line once you are up there.
