Well-known to climbers and hikers all over Europe for multi-day visit to the Karlsbader hut. Lots of great long easy/moderate Multi-pitch routes, also Via Ferrata routes, on fun limestone / dolomite rock surrounded by dramatic peaks. Also some Sport crags.

Multi-pitch routes to consider . . .
* W face of Klein Laserzwand
* etc
. . . (see German-language climbing guidebook for Lienzer Dolomites).

VF routes include . . .
* Laserz
* Panorama
* Seekofel
* Rudl Eller Weg
* Madonnen
See German-language VF / Klettersteig guidebook for Austria:

Getting There Suggest change

There are two major valleys:
Eastern with higher parking for the Dolomiten hut and Karlsbader hut (N46.7630 E12.8011).
Western for the Kerschbaumer Alm (N46.7599 E12.7665).
Here the focus is on the Eastern valley . . .

Parking for Karlsbader hut is at GPS latitude longitude approx (N46.7909 E12.7847).
. . . (reached by roads SE from city of Lienz).
gate for paying toll to drive up to highest parking : (N46.7988 E12.8169)
. . . (toll 8 Euros as of summer 2019).
Karlsbader hut : (N46.7630 E12.8011)

Driving:
Note that Tirol is split into two separated regions, the big one around Innsbruck (and just N of the Dolomites and Arco climbing of Italy and S of Munich city and Zugspitze mountains of Germany) -- the small one (harder to reach but with great climbing of its own) around the city of Lienz, which contains the mountain group of the Lienzer Dolomiten.

Two strategies to drive here are . . .
a) take it as a side trip driving NE from the NE or N part of the main Dolomites of Italy . . . from Cortina d'Ampezzo (50 miles), or from the Pustertal / Alta Pusteria valley along the N side of the main Italian Dolomites (50 miles from Bruneck/Brunico, 70 miles from Corvara).

b) south across the mountains from Munich + Kufstein + Kitzbuhel via the Felbertauern tunnel.
. . . (No short way driving direct from Innsbruck).

Bike:
Many serious cyclists ride up the whole way to the Karlsbader hut starting from the valley by the city of Lienz, but more than just lots of extra work, it's mostly uninteresting through repeated forest. So climbers with bikes (or hybrid Electric E-bikes?) will likely prefer to pay the car toll and haul their bikes up to the highest parking almost to the Dolomiten hut. From there follow signs for Karlsbader hut and ride up the maintained wide gravel road which now goes all the way up to the Karlsbader hut. At first in the repetitive forest, but higher opens to great views.
. . . (or for only a single day of climbing multi-pitch on the W face of the Laserzwand or the via ferrata Laserz KletterSteig, park your bike lower before the K hut, then hike to your climb.

Hike:
Startiing from highest parking, first gentle on wide gravel road a couple minutes first SE then SW to reach the Dolomiten hut. Across the gate, next gentle S about 0.2 mile and soon another gate (might be open). Road starts going uphill S another 0.5 mile to sharp curve left at (N46.7789 E12.7895). Here starts the official shortcut trail, marked with red-on-white paint and some signs. It crosses the wide gravel road a couple of times. It goes steep S about 1.3 mile and reaches the wide gravel road where it curves way left roughly around (N46.7656 E12.7923). From here most hikers finish on the wide road first E then S then W to the Karlsbader hut (N46.7630 E12.8011).
. . . (or it's also possible to hike steeper from there directly ESE up to the hut).

Alternate hike / scramble:
Much more scenic + interesting way to reach the K hut (or the VF Laserz Klettersteig or Laserzwand multi-pitch) is to take the Rudl Eller Weg (hiking route 14, marked with red-on-white paint), with some sustained scrambling sections up + down protected by steel cable (non-experienced climbers likely want belay protection or Via Ferrata kit). Slightly more vertical uphill work than the normal hiking route. Not when wet or snowy because of muddy sections near crossings of (scenic) open fields.
