Description Suggest change

Garden Buttress is a neighborhood alternative to Monkey Buttress, albeit much smaller. It’s in the forest on the quiet north slope of Siu Ma Shan above Quarry Bay on Hong Kong Island. Like Monkey Butt and Black Crag, it’s composed of that beautiful Mount Butler Granite. Friction galore. It was developed with a climbing-gym sensibility: the 8 routes are short, steep, well-protected, comfortably close together along a single continuous wall, and with carabiner anchors to eliminate the hassle of threading rap rings on the final lower. And the “Garden Path” deposits you painlessly at the roomy base without any awkward scrambling.

Getting There Suggest change

There are two ways to access Garden Buttress: (1) the easiest is from the trailhead on Braemar Hill Road. It starts at a higher elevation and is a 1+ km, 20-30-minute approach. The trailhead is on the opposite end of the road from Monkey Buttress (see hongkongclimbing.com). All the same buses can be used. If taking taxi, get dropped outside the east gate of Choi Sai Wu Mansions. The trail system is complex in this part of Tai Tam Country Park, so see approach map and detailed beta sheet for this approach. (2) MTR stations are always easy places to start trips. Even though Quarry Bay MTR starts at a lower elevation, it’s a straightforward 2+ km approach of 45 minutes (see map).

Details for Braemar Hill Road Trail Head Approach (see numbered photos on beta sheet): Pass through gate (1) and after a short level section, trail ascends steeply, past a couple of minor intersections (2,3), to its much more substantial intersection with Sir Cecil’s Ride, a level dirt path (4). Turn left and traverse around the hill for ca. 200 m until a set of stairs appear on your right (5). Ascend this narrow, paved trail a short distance to the top and its intersection with trail to Morning Walkers’ Garden (6). Turn west and ascend gradually for ca. 200 m to the Morning Walkers’ Garden. Pass through the entrance gate (7) and wander to the back of the park, up 2 short sets of steps. Warm up on the chin-up bar on the way by. Descend a short distance to an abandoned catchwater ditch, which is now a well-travelled trail. Follow the “Garden Path” across the mountainside for about 300 m to base of climbs.
