Description
Lashio is the largest city in Northern Shan State. Though Northern Shan has been wracked by conflict and has felt the effects of large scale drug production, Lashio remains a conflict-free area, and has generally been perfectly safe to travel to. Because of the conflicts, some restrictions exist, make sure to double check that you won't be traveling in any restricted areas. As of 2019 all of the developed climbing is very near the city and perfectly safe to travel to.
Accommodation:
Unfortunately Lashio doesn't have many guesthouse options, although there are several hotels. The cheapest and lowest quality option is called Lashio Power Hotel.
Transportation:
Ask your hotel for transportation options to the crag on ring road, they should be able to arrange a car/truck to take you and pick you up.
Myanmar Adventure Outfitters also offers a lunch + snack + crag pick-up/drop-off. Which costs 20,000 MMK plus an additional 12,500 per person for food.
There are not currently motorbike rentals in Lashio.
Connecting:
If you are in Myanmar and want to connect with the climbing community, check out the Myanmar Rock Community FB Group.
Other Activities:
Besides climbing, check out Myanmar Adventure Outfitters they provide adventure tours including hiking, mountain biking, paddle boarding, cliff jumping, waterfall treks, etc., and are gearing up to get more into climbing. Byron, Tyler and the rest of the MAO crew were instrumental in the development of Shantastic Crag, they cleared the trail to the base of the wall, assisted with bolting, and provided transportation, lodging and food for the route developers. Give them a shout when you're in town regardless, they would love to hear from you.
