Access Issue: IMPORTANT notes on Wet Rock and Human Waste Details

WET ROCK: The sandstone in Red Rocks is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN RED ROCKS DURING OR AFTER RAIN. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery bone-dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby.

HUMAN WASTE: Human waste is a major issue plaguing the area. The Southern Nevada Climbers Coalition (SNCC) works to provide "wag bags" free of charge in several locations: Black Velvet Canyon, The Hamlet, Kraft Mountain Area, The Gallery, and The Black Corridor. These bags are designed so that you can pack your waste out. Consider bringing one to be part of your daily kit no matter where you go. Once used, please dispose of them properly. Do not throw them in the toilets at the parking areas.

Description

Cluster of three bumps unofficially called "Quarry" because not far from the Sandstone Quarry parking. The west summit (elev 4708 ft) . (N36.1621 W115.4470) is the "View" because it's closest over the Scenic Loop Road, with the most open sight to the higher western peaks. Two other summits roughly the same elevation run NorthEast 650 ft from that, with the east summit around (N36.1636 W115.4451).

Traversing all three bumps is a scrambling challenge, but likely not as great a challenge as the bushwhacking and scrambling navigation required to access up to and down from the ends of the traverse.

. . . (The ridge of these bumps does not connect southeast to Calico Peak or any other Calico Hills summits, because there is a deep chasm just east from here).

There's another smaller bump with view just 500 ft NE above Sandstone Quarry parking. Wearing shoes with a friction sole, it's a straightforward non-difficult scramble. But its ridge does not connect with the Quarry View bumps or any other Calico Hills summits, because there is a deep chasm just east from the view bump.

warning: Many loose rocks and weak breakable hand- and foot-holds on and around this area - (even when the rock is plenty dry). The rock becomes especially weak for a couple of days after significant rain or snow, so holds are even more likely to break off.

Getting There

Parking at Sandstone Quarry (N36.1622 W115.4503) on the Red Rock Scenic Loop road is closest [ "sq" on Map ].

There's no simple way to get to any of the summits, because the obvious ridge lines have deep chasms that cut across them. So first hike N from parking about 600 ft. Then turn right and bushwhack and scramble ESE up a valley and somehow reach somewhere around the west ("View") and middle summits.
Or perhaps first hike N from parking about 750 ft, then turn right and bushwhack + scramble E about 800 ft, then bear right and scramble about 400 ft S then SE to somewhere around the middle and east summits.
