Description
A somewhat under visited granite massif clad in ice and dotted with unbelievably blue lakes. Often over looked in favor of the other more noteworthy Cascade River summits, the East Ridge of Snowking Mountain is slowly gaining popularity as a great North Cascades introductory climb. It can be ascended in a long day but an overnight bivy near scenic Cyclone Lake is recommended.
Getting There
Kindy Ridge approach: The majority of parties approach from the east/northeast off Cascade River and Kindy Creek for the East Ridge. From Marblemount, drive 14.2 miles up the Cascade River Road and turn right on Kindy Creek Road (FR-1570). Drive as far as possible up the road. It may be possible to drive as far as 4 miles. As of 2018 the road is drivable to about 1300 ft elevation. The rest of the road must be walked. When the road/trail reaches about 2,350 ft in elevation, leave it for a steep well worn path into old growth. Trend southwestward up onto the ridge following a good trail the whole time. If you are not on a good climbers trail, you are unnecessarily shwhacking. Once at about 5000 ft, follow the forested subalpine ridge up and down in a southwesterly direction toward Cyclone Lake basecamp.
The mountain can be approached from the west as well, via the Slide Lake Trail off Illabot Creek Rd. and continuing via fisherman trails to basecamp at Enjar Lake.
