Description
Sunny, windy, and secluded. Currently, 5 easy-to-moderate bolted routes just outside the city of Matagalpa. The bolting was done in September 2017 through the Roca Nica climbing coalition. The crag is climbable year-round.
Vertical Climbing Tours offers guided trips (gear and transportation to the crag from Matagalpa included) and is a stellar group of Matagalpan locals who are helping to build the new Nicaraguan climbing scene from the ground-up. Getting There
From Managua:
After arriving in the Managua airport (MGA), take a taxi to the Mayoreo bus station. From there, you can grab an expreso (faster bus) towards the city of Matagalpa, which should cost about 82 córdabas (approx. $2.64). From Matagalpa, you can take a taxi to Barrio El Jicaro (approx. 15 minutes) and after going down a large hill where you can see the mountain ahead, you will continue up an inclination for another few minutes. The taxi ride will cost about 200 córdabas (approx. $6.50) one way to be split between how many passengers you have. José is my go-to taxi guy and knows the route to the crag well; his number is +505 8658 2734. You can enter through the fence on the left side and continue past many barbed wire gates until you reach the rock face.
Note: the exact entrance and path are very confusing to locate and navigate the first time if you are not traveling with someone who has gone before. Because of that, I would recommend giving Andy at Vertical Climbing Tours a call for your first time. Cell phone: +505 8835 2108 or find them on Facebook/Trip Advisor from the links in the Description.
