Description
Getting There
After turning off HW 2, head towards Index as usual. But instead of turning left at the large bridge to take you into town (5th Ave), continue along the Index-Galena Rd. In about 2.1 miles the road comes very close to the river. Here there are great views of the river and the other side--the boulder destination is below the cliffs on the other side. Right over the rise (~100 yards further up the road), look for the gravel pull-out on the river side.
Park here and walk down to the river, following the trail. The trail goes upriver for about 70 yards then veers left down to the riverbed cobble. Being very careful, cross the river (only attempt this when the river is low), head for the dry river-branch bed on the other side. Walk down this creek bed about 150 yards, looking for the trail marking on the right side. Then walk the trail about 5-10 minutes to the boulders.
