Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closure Details
Each year, Washington Climbers Coalition partners with WA State Parks and WA DFW to monitor the Index Town Walls for nesting raptors. When hiking or climbing outside this closure buffer, avoid disturbance, keep noise to a minimum, and use your best judgment to gauge and mitigate your impact.
Secluded in a moss covered forest, these beautiful boulders sit waiting for the right time of year when the river is low.
After turning off HW 2, head towards Index as usual. But instead of turning left at the large bridge to take you into town (5th Ave), continue along the Index-Galena Rd for another 2.1 miles. Find a gravel pull-out to park off the paved road. Walk down to the river. Your goal lies just below the cliffs on the other side. Being very careful, cross the river (only attempt this when the river is low), heading for the dry creek bed on the other side. Walk up this creek bed about 150', turn right towards the cliff, find the trail, and walk the trail about 5-10 minutes to the boulders.
