Description
Piles of small to medium boulders lie in these woods. Folklore says the outcroppings form some sort of celestially significant layout. It is worth a visit if you live in the area.History of the area: King Philip was the colonial name for Metacomet, son of Wampanoag chief Massasoit who helped the Pilgrims. After the Europeans kept encroaching on native lands, Metacomet led a violent rebellion, King Philip’s War, in which natives attacked almost half of the New England towns (1675 – 78). There’s no proof that King Philip and the allied tribes met or camped at the sites in Sharon that are named for him, but it’s likely that the tribes passed through the area on their travels from eastern Mass. and Rhode Island to central and western Mass. Nearby, but not yet labeled on MP is "King Philip's Cave."
Getting There
There is an entrance at the end of King Philip Road in Sharon. Follow the short trail to the main outcropping. Other outcrops lie in the woods close by. Some hiking and searching may result in finding more boulders. There is a small lot on the north side of Mansfield Street in Sharon MA. 4-6 cars can fit here, but be mindful not to block anyone in. The lot is fairly close to the intersection of Massapoag Ave & Mansfield Street. 98 Mansfield Street Sharon MA is a good address to plug into a GPS in order to arrive at the spot. The main trail to King Philip's Rock Hikes northward for a few minutes, then heads eastward for a few more minutes. The crag is less than 10 minutes from the parking area. The trails are clearly labeled with large wooden signs, and there is a framed map before the trail begins.
