DescriptionNot the most dramatic peak in the Rock Creek / Little Lakes Valley, but interesting features for scrambler/climbers and backcountry skiers.
Its special feature is that it is close to Parking.

descent: Unfortunately there's no easy way off the summit (unless on skis), since both the east and west sides of the ridge are steep and slippery.
(a) One less difficult way is to continue north past the summit until everything gets gentler. If parked lower at the Rock Creek Pack station (the location of parking / road plowing / closure-gate for late-spring fishing + backcountry skiing), then could bushwhack out + down N then E. But that's a lot of extra distance if parked at the summer trailhead Mosquito Flat -- so . . .
(b) After continuing north to gentleness, instead could go W + SW down to meet Mono Pass trail, and return S + E, then NE + N on that to Parking Mosquito Flat. Or could down-climb the southern section of the summit ridge then walk NW down scree to meet Mono Pass trail.
(c) One contributer to SummitPost.org suggests going down a sand / scree slope on the East side, supposed to be easy to see, starting near summit (perhaps a bit south).
Getting ThereDriving: Take rt 395 to Tom's Place (between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes), then Upper Rock Creek road west and south.
- Summer trailhead is at the end of the road at Mosquito Flat - GPS latitude longitude approx (N37.4354 W118.7469).
- Late Spring fishing + backcountry skiing trailhead is at the Pack Station (N37.4525 W118.7420).
- Winter trailhead is near the East Fork junction (SnoPark permit required) - around (N37.4942 W118.7180).
Hiking access in summer is normally by the Mono Pass hiking trail - [ see on Map ] - which at (N37.4290 W118.7510) leaves the main valley hiking trail - [ see on Map ] - about 0.5 mile south from parking, then goes up around SE side then S side and up to Mono Pass (N37.4253 W118.7728) and continues north below the W side of Mt Starr.
