Description
The West Side Crags are the group of crags located to the west of the Chinese Mountains South Peak. They are spread out across a triangular-shaped hillside of open, mossy and patchy forested terrain. These crags are the more moderate of the crags at Chinese Mountains, almost all the routes are between 15 and 25m (with a few exceptions) and the crags have good base areas for hanging out and relatively easy access to the top anchors.
Getting There
These climbing bluffs are all very accessible from the Beech's Mountain trail which runs along the base of the hillside before turning sharply uphill along the west edge of the crag group to its destination at Beech's Mountain. From the main Chinese Mountains parking area take the Beech's Mountain trail which heads sharply left (west) from the trailhead. The trail takes a fairly level traverse through the forest and then across a more open hillside. Look for the marked climbers' paths that branch off the trail to the individual crags. Some of the crags are right beside the main hiking trail.
Climbers' paths crossing the hillside link the West Side Crags to the South Peak Crags notably Keystone Crag to Manzanita Wall and The Balcony to the Great Wall complex.
