The two areas Jefferson County Open Space intends to close in Clear Creek Canyon, shown on the attached maps, encompass the active eagle nests. If the Clear Creek eagles continue to nest in the active nests, these areas will remain closed from February 1 through July 31. If the eagles choose different nesting sites, the closures will be adjusted accordingly to protect those eagles during their breeding season.

Description

This steep wall of layered gneiss sits high above the summit of Little Eiger. Technically this is on the same massive formation as the forgotten Pile Driver but quite a bit higher up the hill, at the far right end of the cliffband. The climbing experience here is not for everyone. This is an alpine crag by Clear Creek sport climbing standards, with a hard approach, secluded position, and complex routefinding on fractured rock.

Most of the routes are essentially jug hauls climbing steeply overhanging walls. Those with an adventurous attitude will find the climbing to be a lot of fun and pretty uncommon for the Front Range. The crag also faces north and overhangs enough that the routes never see the sun, making this a great option on warmer days.

4. Aftermathematics, 12-, 1p, 45’, 5B to 2BA.
5. Savage Cats, 11+, 1p, 30’, 4B to 2BA.

Getting There

Park as for Little Eiger. Follow a good trail on the south side of the river downstream to the first major drainage east of Little Eiger (this drainage forms a popular ice scramble in the winter). Turn right, following a steep and loose trail along the west side of this drainage. Follow the trail as high as you can, until it makes sense to head straight up the hillside (heading west). It is possible to follow a faint animal trail that makes the approach much easier. Climb the steep hillside until the routes come into view.
