Description Suggest change

Blodgett Peak holds some gems if you know where to look and how to get to it. This area mostly escaped the initial exploration phase of Colorado Springs climbing development. Up until the early 2000's, this parcel was guarded by private property, meaning potential climbers would have to park far below the area and trespass and bushwhack through a private ranch to get to the goods, and hope that their car didn't get towed away while doing so. Despite these barriers, a few hardy souls made the hike and picked some of the low hanging fruit to include the big right facing corner system splitting the east face, as well as the Becker-Cheyney crack system. An old "summit" register still hangs from pitons in the middle of the wall. It’s secrets all rotted by rainwater.

The best areas for climbing are the East Face, Skyline Crag, and the numerous boulders strewn about the mountain. Most of the boulders were climbed (probably first) by Nick Murray, who is very good at cleaning up after himself and follows a solid leave no trace ethic. So, even if you don't see chalk or a landing pad, Nick has likely hiked the problem in his flip flops.

The best seasons to climb are fall, winter, and spring. The mountain’s southeasterly aspect makes the crags here (not to mention the approach) almost unbearable in the summer heat. It’s best to wait for when the high temps drop below 80 in town.

Getting There Suggest change

From Colorado Springs, take I-25 north to exit 146 for Garden of the Gods. Turn left at Garden of the Gods Road, and drive 1.1 miles. Turn right onto Centennial Blvd., and drive 4.8 miles north as Centennial turns to Woodmen Rd. The Blodgett Peak Open Space parking area is on the left.

The approach can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour depending on how fit you are.
