Description
Coal Wall gets its name not only because it's in coal country, but also because of the black dust that settles on the crag, likely from the above railroad. However, don't let this deter you - railroad traffic has since come to a halt because of the decline in the coal industry. This area offers some moderate climbing right off the river. The sport climbing is also directly beside the slightly upstream deep water soloing, cliff jumping, and rope swing. Please consider taking a trash bag and giving the area some TLC on your way out.
Getting There
Approach: 10 minutes. Park in the gravel parking area off of 80 that is located before a brown "Rive Access 1/4 mile sign" (see map for parking area). Follow the trail, crossing over the railroad tracks. Head downhill on the right side of the bridge. Break right near the first vertical support on the bridge, following along the top of the cliff. From here, you can set up top ropes. Follow along the top of the cliff until it ends then scramble down the ledge to reach the base of the cliff. Walk upstream to reach the routes.
