Description
This is a promising new section of Uncompahgre Formation quartzite adjacent to the Misfits Wall. It is approximately 200 feet at its tallest point and has an east/southeast aspect, so it has good morning-afternoon sun. The Chunder Dome has an Eldo-like nature to it with lots of diagonal systems and interconnecting features that require a mix of natural pro and bolts to make them reasonable. The rock is mostly bomber, but there is plenty of looseness out on the new ground, know who's below you before trundling. That being said, there are plenty more new adventures on the Chunder Dome to be had.
Getting There
Approach as for the Misfits Wall and Astro Zombies. From the base of A.Z., you have 2 options: 1) climb first pitch of A.Z., and continue past first set of anchors on 4th class, then bear left into a bushy gully for 20 feet (#2-#3 Camalot) up to a big pine tree and belay bolt. Or 2) from the base, walk left (upstream) along cliff until you can cut up a small gully weakness with a couple big pines coming out of it. Scramble along a ledge to the left and up 4th Class terrain to the base of Chunder Dome. Scramble up rock slab on the right to reach the belay bolt at the top of the slab. Per Pete Davis: the 2nd approach option is best for those wanting to climb Blood Bag.
The approach time to the base of A.Z. is 15-20 minutes from the car if you know where you are going.
